Description
37 and 39 Mill Street is a range of houses located in Ashwell. The north end, which includes Nos. 39 and 41, is a late 15th century or early 16th century hall house, with an early 17th century extension to the south and a date of 1762 marked on the hall's cross wing. The building features a timber frame with cemented walls and 20th century pargetting, along with a painted brick base and a roof made of fish scale and plain tiles.
The structure has two storeys on the south side and one storey with attics on the north. The two-storey section includes five 18th century two-light leaded casements, while the gabled cross wing has a three-light leaded casement on each floor. The northern part has a single window, with a 17th to 18th century five-light leaded casement on the ground floor and a 17th century two-light gabled dormer in the attic. The cross wing to the south features an upper floor that jetties out, supported by plain joists and curved brackets.
A 17th century red brick ridge chimney stack is located on the north side, inserted into the cross passage of the former hall, while the south block has two rebuilt ridge stacks. Inside, the hall on the north side has a fireplace with clunch jambs and a timber lintel, and the cross wing fireplace is entirely made of clunch with a depressed four-centre head. Both the hall range and the wing have a clasped purlin roof.
