Description

Woodhouse Farmhouse is a Grade II listed farmhouse, primarily dating from the 16th century. It features a main range with a two-cell cross-wing that is set forward to the right, and there is an additional wing from around 1800 at the angle of these two ranges. The building is timber framed and has mid-20th century textured render, with a roof covered in 20th century black pantiles. It stands two storeys tall and has various small-paned casement windows, mostly from the 19th century.

The cross-wing has overhanging gables, and in its side wall, there is a lintel of a projecting first-floor window. The front of the main range includes a lean-to porch with a 19th century six-panel door, where the upper four panels are glazed, and it features a reeded architrave. Flanking the doorway are carved pilasters and consoles from the early 17th century, which were likely brought from another location, possibly in the 19th century. The pilasters have sunk faces adorned with fruit and flower motifs, and their capitals, one of which is mutilated, display acanthus leaves, helices, and four-lobed flowers. Each console features a carved head spouting foliage and tendrils; one console includes a shield depicting an animal, while the other has a shield carved with a merchant's mark.

Internally, there is a stack at the junction of the two ranges, with a plain oblong shaft. Close studding and tension braces can be seen in the side wall of the cross-wing. One ground floor room in the wing has an ovolo axial bridging beam and slightly moulded joists. The roof over the center of the main range is a wind-braced clasped purlin roof. There is a 19th century staircase by the stack. The farmhouse is surrounded by a medieval moat.
