Description

Low Barn Cottage is a house dating from the 15th century, with a 16th-century cross-wing to the right that extends to the rear. It was renovated around 1976. The building is timber framed and plastered, topped with a pantiled roof. The left section is 1½ storeys high, while the cross-wing is two storeys. The cross-wing features an end jetty supported by what are likely original brackets. There are mid-20th century casement windows and one gabled dormer. A stack with a small mid-20th century chimney is located at the junction of the two sections. The side wall of the wing has a mid-20th century porch and entrance door.

The 1½-storey section includes half of a former open hall, with an open truss that has a cambered tie beam and arched braces meeting at the center, embedded in the gable end wall. There is no visible evidence of a crown-post. One medieval wallplate shows a stop-splayed scarf joint, while the other has an edge-halved scarf, which is presumably of a later date. The inserted floor features a heavily chamfered bridging beam with solid braces to the wallposts, one of which has been renewed. The joists are concealed. In the cross-wing, some intact 16th-century studding can be seen, along with steep reverse-curved wall braces. The interior has not been fully examined.
