Description
Mansard Cottage and Byfields is a pair of houses, originally four dwellings, dating from the early 18th century and altered in the 20th century. The buildings have a timber frame, are rendered and weatherboarded, and feature a tiled gambrel roof. Each house has three bays and is one storey with an attic.
Mansard Cottage, located on the left, is weatherboarded above a cement rendered plinth. It has two windows and two architraved doors, all grouped to the right of center. One door is part glazed, and the windows are two-light small pane flush frame casements. There are three dormers with raking hoods, two of which have two lights and one with four lights. A cross axial ridge stack is positioned to the left of center.
Byfields, on the right, has a central axial ridge stack and features 20th-century panelled pargetted rendering. It has a central entrance with a half-glazed architraved door, flanked by two and three-light small pane flush frame casements, all with hoodboards. There are two four-light dormers with raking hoods, and a slightly extruded right end stack. A two-light casement is found in the right return.
At the rear right, there is a short wing with a recessed entrance and a small hood, along with a gambrel roof that has a half hip to the rear. A lean-to outshut addition is present at the rear left. The interior features stop-chamfered axial bearer and a clasped purlin roof, although Byfields has not been inspected.
