Description

The Hoops is a house that dates from the early to mid 18th century, with a refronting in the early 19th century and alterations made around 1950. It features a combination of red brick and timber framing, with the front refronted in white brick and all rendered. The building has a tiled roof and is L-shaped in plan, consisting of three bays in each wing and standing two storeys tall.

The 19th-century brick front includes a plinth and a central entrance porch that is gabled and pantiled, with a half-glazed door. Flanking the entrance are canted bay windows that contain eight-light mullion and transom casements. The first floor has cross casements with flush frames over the outer bays. The left gable end has a slightly protruding red brick stack. The roof is hipped to the right, leading to a rear wing that is also red brick fronted and features a lobby entrance with a central recessed door that has a segmental head, along with single two-light and cross casements in shallow reveals. There is a central ridge stack and a one-bay, one-storey outshut attached to the rear gable end. The rear displays rendered timber framing with mixed fenestration and a 20th-century lean-to outshut.

Inside, there is an early 19th-century dogleg staircase with slat balusters and a moulded ramped handrail. Some exposed framing can be seen in the rear wing, including jowled posts and tension braces. This building was formerly known as the Hoops Public House.
