Description

Rat's Castle Cottage is a house that was originally four dwellings, likely built in the 17th century in two phases, with alterations and extensions made in the early 20th century. The structure features a timber frame with 20th-century pargetted rendering, a knapped flint and red brick plinth, and a thatched roof. It consists of a long, narrow range of two connected three-bay buildings, separated by a straight joint, with a through passage on the left that has an inserted stack, and a stack at the right end. A later bay was added to the far right. The cottage was originally one storey with an attic.

On the right bay of each three-bay group, there are two recessed plank doors. The windows include six three-light small pane flush frame casements, along with one two-light casement. There are four dormers featuring two and three-light small pane casements, two of which have pargetted panels below the sills and thatched hoods. The early stacks are located at the left and right ends, with a later stack added to the centre, all positioned on the ridge and featuring 19th-century rebuilt caps.

The left gable end has flint and brick on the ground floor with a three-light casement, while the weatherboarded gable features two small lights. The right end is made of whitewashed brick and includes a three-light casement with a hipped roof. At the rear, there are five small single-light windows, two doors, an exposed post, and some flint and brick. Inside, the floor has been removed, revealing an open clasped purlin roof with struts to the collars, some straight windbraces, and a timber lintel above an early fireplace.
