Description
The White Horse Public House is a public house dating from the 17th century, with a front that was remodeled in the 18th century and further altered in the 19th century. It is likely built with a timber frame, now covered in roughcast with a red brick front. The building has a tiled roof and consists of two storeys plus an attic, originally designed with two cells and probably a lobby entry.
On the ground floor, there is a central entrance featuring a late 19th-century gabled porch with decorative timber framing and moulded bargeboards. Flanking the entrance are canted bay windows with tiled hoods, a 16-pane sash window on the left and a 12-pane sash on the right. The outer bays on the first floor have two-light small-pane flush-frame casements. A brick plat band and end pilaster strips can be seen beneath the roughcast. In the 19th century, a gable was raised at the center front, adding an attic window with a two-light casement and moulded bargeboards. The right end of the building has a small sash window in the attic, while the left end reveals exposed purlins.
At the rear, there is a continuous lean-to outshut with a catslide roof, also from the 19th century, and internal stacks located on the flanks where the main range meets the lean-to. Additionally, there is a one-storey gabled outshut from the 20th century on the left side, featuring a hipped roof at the back. Inside, the building has stop-chamfered axial binding beams, although the first floor has not been inspected. It may have previously been known as the Chequers.
