Description

This house, located at 104 Orchard Road, was designed in 1936 by M.B. Crowley and C.G. Kemp for the Hopkins family. It is an example of the International Modern Style, built as a rectangular two-story structure. The exterior is primarily yellow stock brick in a stretcher bond pattern, with cavity walls and a blue Staffordshire brick plinth. The monopitch roof is covered in blue-grey Staffordshire pantiles.

The ground floor's principal entrance is positioned to the left of the centre and features splayed jambs and a hood. There’s a row of six square metal casements, set within wooden frames and separated by brick mullions, to the right of the entrance, and one to the left. The first floor has a row of ten similar casements. Boxed eaves are present. The return elevations feature single lights. Two stacks rise from the roof towards the rear, where a large overhang has shaped rafters; the soffit was originally painted in contrasting colours. The garden-facing facade has three tripartite casements and French doors on the ground floor, and two- and three-light casements on the first floor. A projecting screen wall is located to the right. Associated outbuildings, one story high and with coped parapets, project slightly to the left and are set back slightly to the right, with a hooded entrance.

The interior features a large, open living space on the ground floor, and a corridor along the front on the first floor. Number 104 forms part of a group with numbers 102 and 106, showcasing an early application of a monopitch roof and a design that would have remained contemporary thirty years later.
