Description
Pennyfathers is a house located on Harmer Green Lane in Welwyn. It dates from the late 16th century, with extensions added in the 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick and features old tile roofs, forming a T-plan layout. It has two storeys and attics. The large cross wing on the west side has crow-stepped gables and a central chimney stack with conjoined square shafts. There is a rear east projection of the same date, also with a crow-stepped gable. The windows are wood mullioned casement types. To the east, there is a lower extension made up of two blocks that includes a porch, and there is a modern extension on the west side. Notably, this house was the home of playwright George Bernard Shaw from 1904 to 1906.
