Description
Welwyn North Railway Station and Footbridge was built in 1850 for the Great Northern Railway, with a footbridge added in the late 19th century. The station is constructed of red brick with minimal stone dressings and features a Welsh slate roof, along with cast and wrought iron platform canopies and the footbridge. The main building, designed in a plain Italianate villa style, is located on the upside.
The yard elevation is two storeys high, with a slightly projecting wing on the left that has a blind ground floor, a first-floor band, and paired narrow windows above. To the right, the ground floor includes a through arch with two arched windows and three-pane sash windows to the right, with a similar band as before. The upper level has paired windows and a central blind panel. The hipped roofs have eaves overhangs supported by brackets, and there are chimneys at either end. The waiting room on the right features three arched doorways, while lavatories are located to the left.
The platform elevation has a small canopy supported by four cast iron columns with decorative brackets and a slightly fretted valance. The windows of the old station house are all boarded up. The interior was not inspected.
The late 19th-century wrought iron lattice girder footbridge has cast iron columns and stair railings. It has been raised to accommodate electric catenaries and shows signs of alteration, but it has good group value with the station building, as does the portal of Welwyn tunnel to the north. The buildings on the downside have been replaced.
Historically, this station was originally opened as Welwyn and was renamed Welwyn North by the London and North Eastern Railway when Welwyn Garden City station opened in 1926. The line was engineered by William and Joseph Cubitt and built by Thomas Brassey. The main building has undergone remarkably little alteration.
