Description
41 and 43 Whiting Street is a house that was later converted into a row of four cottages and is now two houses. It dates from the early 17th century and features a timber-framed structure with roughcast exterior. The roof is covered with 20th-century plain tiles and has a wide wooden eaves soffit.
The building is two storeys high, with attics and cellars. It has a five-window range, with mainly two-light small-paned casements on the upper storey and nine-pane sash windows on the ground storey, all set in heavy moulded flush frames. There are two gabled dormers, each with two-light single bar casements. The ground storey includes two ledged and battened doors in plain surrounds, and each half of the building has a continuous fascia board above the ground storey windows and doors. There are 20th-century single-storey rear extensions to No. 41, which also features an old gabled dormer with a two-light casement window, while No. 43 has a small rear wing.
Inside No. 41, there is a high weathered plinth on the inner side of the north gable wall and good studding above, with a four-light diamond mullioned window on the upper storey. The original rear wall has been removed on the ground storey, leaving no evidence of studding. The frame and roof are both in three bays, with the roof featuring clasped purlins and straight collars, and the rafters are covered. The main tie-beams are very heavy, chamfered but rough. The internal chimney-stack between the two houses has its brickwork completely covered. No. 43 also has a three-bay frame and roof with a similar structure, but the heavy main beams on the ground storey have been hacked back or boxed. On the first storey, the main posts, wall plates, and tie-beams are exposed.
