Description
58 Whiting Street is a house dating from the early 16th century, with later extensions at the rear. It features a timber-framed and rendered structure topped with a plain tiled roof. The building has two storeys, an attic, and a cellar. The exterior includes one window on each storey: the first storey has a two-light small-paned casement window with a flush surround, while the ground storey has a larger but similar window. A gabled dormer with plain barge-boards contains a two-light casement window with a single bar to the lights. An end chimney is linked to the stack of the adjoining house, No. 59.
Inside, the cellar has been converted into a room but retains its original ceiling, featuring a large chamfered main beam and substantial joists set on edge. The frame consists of two bays, with a small section of studding exposed along the former rear wall. The fireplace on the ground storey has jambs made of re-used Abbey stone, with Norman nook shafts and cushion capitals topped by a plain timber lintel. On the upper storey, there is a long transverse beam in the inserted ceiling. The roof, structured in three bays with a chimney bay, has collars that are partly cut back for headroom, and all other components are covered.
