Description

32 Whiting Street is a house that dates from the 16th century, 17th century, and later. It is timber-framed and roughcast rendered, topped with a tiled roof. The building has two storeys, a cellar, and attics. A jettied gable projects from the south end of the front. There are two windows on each storey: on the upper storey, there is an old small-paned two-light casement window and a tripartite sash window with a single vertical glazing bar in the central light, all set in a flush cased frame. Below the gable on the ground storey is a similar sash window and another single sash window with vertical glazing bars. The entrance door has six panels, with the top four panels glazed, and is framed in plain wood. The upper part of the north side wall features a section of exposed studding. At the rear, there are 19th-century extensions with shallow-pitched slate roofs.

Inside, there is a small cellar with some stone in the walling and a good original timber ceiling. The house has two separate frames: the jettied section is the earlier part, featuring an unusual arrangement of ceiling beams in the ground storey front room and the housings of an original window at the north end, which is now internal. On the upper storey, sections of square Jacobean panelling have been reused, and there is an old ledged and battened door leading to the attics. The roof has a side purlin structure in a single bay with very heavy timbering, including exposed principal rafters, collars, and some rafters. The remainder of the frame is later in date with few exposed features and is likely the remnant of a small separate cottage. There is also a corner stair and a low attic storey.
