Description
57 Whiting Street is a house from the early 17th century, constructed with a timber frame and rendered exterior, topped with a plain tiled roof. It features a gable end chimney stack with a simple red brick shaft. The building has two storeys and an attic, with two 2-light small-paned casement windows on the first floor and one sash window on the ground floor, which has a single vertical glazing bar in a moulded flush cased frame. There is a gabled dormer on the front slope of the roof, also with a 2-light small-paned casement window, and another similar dormer on the rear slope. The entrance is a slightly recessed six-panel door, with the top two panels glazed, set in a wood surround with plain reveals.
At the rear, there is a 19th-century single-storey lean-to extension that was raised to two full storeys in the 1980s. Inside, there is no cellar, and the frame consists of two bays. The north end of the frame is adjacent to an earlier building and only includes the main components of the frame without studding. The ground floor chimney stack retains original early 17th-century bricks and mortar, with a plain chamfered lintel featuring curved stops. The main ceiling beam has ovolo moulding, and on the first floor, both the main ceiling beam and trimmers display ovolo mouldings along with a type of jewel stop with a groove. The upper wall at the north end showed traces of external pargetting before recent restoration, and the roof retains original rafters, although the construction method is not clearly defined.
