Description
No. 38 Whiting Street is a house that was originally part of the cross-wing to No. 36, dating from the late 15th century to early 16th century, with later alterations. It features a timber-framed structure that is rendered, topped with a plaintiled roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a jettied design along the street front.
The front includes a 12-pane sash window in a flush cased frame on both the ground and first storeys, flanked by original high windows with moulded mullions—three lights on the first storey and four lights on the ground storey. At the apex of the gable, there are two linked 20th-century single-light windows. The jetty is supported by shaped brackets.
There is a rounded single-storey corner extension with a 20th-century three-light window and a sloping plaintiled roof, which connects to a side chimney stack featuring a plain red brick shaft. The entrance, also from the 20th century, is located along the side wall.
Inside, there is a small cellar that was not inspected. The building's frame consists of two two-bay sections, with the rear being a later addition. The front room has a heavy main beam with a large chamfer and remnants of a timber fireplace lintel. In the front upper room, the main beam has been replaced, and the long arched braces have been removed. The roof above features a collar-purlin supported by thin braces, with little framing exposed in the rear of the building.
