Description
54 and 55 Whiting Street is a house from the 18th century that has been divided into two separate residences. It features a timber-framed structure with a rendered exterior and a plain tiled roof that has a wide eaves overhang and a plain wood soffit. The building has two gable end chimney stacks with tall, plain red brick shafts.
The house is two storeys tall with attics and has a two-window range. The upper storey has two-light small-paned casement windows with segmental-arched surrounds, separated by a blank panel of a similar shape. The ground storey features 12-pane sash windows with segmental-arched surrounds in flush cased frames. There are also two flat-headed dormers with small-paned casement windows. The central doors are paired and recessed, framed in plain wood reveals and architraves, topped with a shallow hood supported by small brackets.
At the rear, there is a single-storey lean-to that has been partly raised, and the rear wall of the house is made of red brick. Inside No. 55, there are no exposed timbers, and both storeys have boxed-in main beams. The attic is large, and there is a winder stair located in the rear corner.
