Description

59 Whiting Street is a house dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. It is timber-framed, with exposed timbers on the two upper storeys at the front and a rendered gable. The roof is covered with plain tiles.

The building has two storeys and an attic. The centre of the first storey features a square bay that projects forward, supported by ornate console brackets and extending up to a large gabled dormer. Originally, this bay had a high window with two small side lights, but it has been replaced with an Edwardian small-paned cross window. In the attic, the original window has been blocked and replaced with a smaller two-light small-paned casement. On the ground floor, there is one small-paned cross window and one small-paned single light window with a transom. The entrance features a six-panel door, with the top four panels glazed. A large red brick chimney stack is shared with the adjoining house at No.58. There is also a small gabled rear wing.

Inside, the front range consists of two bays, with double ogee and roll-moulding on the joists and a more complex moulding on the main cross beams. One bay is interrupted by the chimney stack, which appears to have been inserted. The fireplace has stone jambs made from re-used Norman nook shafts and a plain timber lintel. The roof features a plain clasped purlin design in two bays, and the rear wing has been raised.
