Description
Steep Top is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. It features a timber-framed structure with brick infill and replacement walling, topped by a plain tiled roof. The building consists of two framed bays aligned east to west and has a large external rubble chimney with a chamfered plinth and a detached brick stack at the east gable end. It is a single storey with an attic, which includes dormers.
The framing includes three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with short straight braces in the upper corners, and a collar and tie-beam truss with two struts at the west gable end. The south front elevation has two ground floor 2-light casements with cambered heads, two gabled dormers with 2-light casements, and the main entrance at the west gable end features a lean-to porch and a ledged and battened door with a cambered head. Inside, there is a winder staircase in the west bay and a large fireplace with a 19th-century range in the east bay.
