Description

The barn and cow house, located immediately north-east of Court Farmhouse, date back to the early 17th century with some alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. The barn is constructed from sandstone rubble, features some timber-framing with rendered infill, and has weatherboarding at the gable end. It has a plain tiled roof and consists of seven bays arranged east to west. The second and fifth bays from the east end are wagon bays with opposed cart entries that have double doors. There are ventilation slits in the rubble walling. The framing includes one row of square panels beneath the eaves, and the tie-beam trusses in the gable ends are partly visible, likely featuring a lattice strut arrangement. The south front elevation has a door in the west bay along with a small loft door in the panel above. Inside, the roof trusses have been partly altered, but some collar and tie-beam trusses with raking struts in the lower corners remain, along with two tiers of purlins. The cow house, built in the 19th century, is made of sandstone rubble and brick, also with a plain tiled roof. It is a single level structure with three bays, and the south front elevation features two square windows and three doors. The interior has two intermediate king-post trusses. Together, the barn and cow house enclose the north side of the farmyard at Court Farmhouse.
