Description

This building is a barn and cowhouse located about 100 yards north-east of Risbury Court. It dates from the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and late 20th century. The structure is part timber-framed and weatherboarded on a rubble base, and part sandstone rubble, topped with corrugated metal roofs.

The barn consists of seven framed bays arranged roughly east to west. It features a wagon bay in the fourth bay from the west end, which has opposed cart entries with double doors. There are 19th-century lean-to outshuts, likely used as shelter sheds, on swept arch-braced timber posts on the south side. Additional 19th and 20th-century lean-to additions are present at the west end and to the north-west.

Inside, the wall framing mainly consists of three rows of square panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate, along with some large rectangular panels. The roof is supported by collar and tie-beam trusses with struts, and the intermediate trusses have raking struts.

The cowhouse is attached to the east gable end of the barn, continuing the main roofline. It has three bays and two levels, with some ventilation slits in the rubble sections of the walls. The main north elevation features a double doorway and a loft opening. Inside, the walls have either one row of panels at eaves level or three rows of panels from sill to wall-plate, and the tie-beam trusses at the east end have decorative lattice struts.
