Description

This building is a barn and cow house dating from the 18th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. The barn is timber-framed and weatherboarded, standing on a sandstone rubble plinth, topped with a roof made of plain tiles and corrugated iron. It features three framed bays oriented east to west, with a central wagon bay that has opposed cart entries and double doors. The framing consists of two rectangular panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with the upper row being smaller and a long straight lower panel. There are corner braces, and the end collar and tie-beam trusses have five struts beneath the collar and a V-strut above. The intermediate tie-beam trusses include two raking struts, and there are two tiers of trenched purlins.

The cow house is constructed of rubble with brick dressings and has a plain tiled roof. It is designed in an L-shape with two levels and features a dentilled eaves cornice. The three-bay section adjoins the east gable end of the barn and has a four-bay south return at the east end. The openings have cambered heads, and the three-bay section includes two three-light windows, a rectangular light, and two doors facing the farmyard. To the left, external steps lead up to a loft door. The four-bay return has two three-light windows, a two-light window, and three doors also facing the farmyard. It likely served as a shelter shed, as three bullnosed brick piers are visible in the walling.

Inside, the roof features three intermediate king-post trusses. At the south gable end, there is an additional brick bay that includes a small fireplace. The barn and cow house enclose the farmyard to the north and east, both facing Hill Farmhouse to the southwest.
