Description

Pool Corner is a former barn and adjoining cowhouse, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with an extension for the cowhouse added in the 18th and 19th centuries. The structure features a weatherboarded timber frame, which has been partly reclad in corrugated steel sheets, with a sandstone and brick plinth. The cowhouse is constructed in a mixed garden wall bond and has a timber frame at the south end. The roofs are covered with plain tiles and have gabled ends.

The barn has a three-bay plan, with a cart entrance located at the south side of the central bay and the cowhouse range extending at right angles to the north of the east bay, which was extended in the 19th century. The south front of the barn features a full-height cart entrance at the center, along with a small doorway on the north side, both of which have 20th-century doors. The south bays of the cowhouse are weatherboarded timber frame, with some upper panels containing wattle infill. The north extension of the cowhouse has a partly rebuilt west wall.

Inside, the barn has a three-bay frame with jowled storey posts, heavy studs, tension braces, and no midrail. The tie-beams are equipped with queen-struts and high collars that are morticed to the principal rafters, with trenched purlins and an intact diagonal ridgepiece. The common rafters and battens are also intact. The roof over the cowhouse features tall queen-posts that are supported on floor beams and tied to wall-plates, morticed to the principals, with collars above that include king-posts and trenched purlins.
