Description

Old Dovecote is a former granary and stables that has been converted into a cartshed. It was originally built in the 18th century and remodelled in the 19th century. The structure is made of red brick in English garden wall and other bonds, with a weatherboarded gable at the north end. The roof is covered in plain tiles, featuring a gable end to the north and a hipped design over the taller south block, which has a ball finial at the apex.

The building has a square plan for the granary at the south end, while the rectangular stable range is located to the north, where a later cart entrance has been inserted into the north end wall.

On the exterior, the east elevation shows a two-storey granary on the left, with doorways on both the ground and first floors. The stable range is slightly advanced on the right and features a small window and a blocked doorway. The north side of the granary has a brick projection at the centre of the wall extending up to the eaves, and the west side of the granary has a blocked doorway on the left. The west wall of the former stables has been partly rebuilt in brick. The south gable end of the former stables has a cart entrance on the left, which includes a timber lintel, and a left door in the weatherboarded gable above.

Inside, the stables, now functioning as a cartshed, have a loft over the south bay supported by tall queen-posts that are tied to the wall plates and supported on a floor beam. The principal rafters feature a straight collar, trenched purlins, and a diagonal ridgepiece. The roof over the former granary consists of common rafters.
