Description

The barn and stables, located about 10 yards north of Court Farmhouse, date from the late 16th century and have undergone alterations and additions in the late 19th century. The structure is timber-framed and rests on a base of lias limestone rubble, with some brick infill and replacement walling, incorporating handmade brick. Parts of the building are weatherboarded, and it features plain tiled roofs. Originally, the building had an L-shaped plan consisting of three framed bays aligned east to west, with a two-bay cross-wing at the east gable end. This cross-wing was later extended by three bays, one of which includes a wagon bay with opposed cart entries and double doors. The barn is mainly two levels.

Externally, little of the framing is visible. The east elevation features a two-light casement window, a stable door, and blocked ventilation slits on the later part of the structure next to the wagon bay. The south elevation has a stable door for each bay and an attic light in the cross-wing to the right. Inside, the original section has four panels from the sill to the wall-plate and short straight upper corner braces. The roof consists of arch-braced collar and tie-beam trusses with two collars, primarily four struts to the lower collar, and two to the upper collar. There are two tiers of purlins and swept wind-braces, and part of the upper level is plastered, likely serving as a granary. The brick addition features collar and tie-beam intermediate trusses with two struts to the collar. A small lean-to extension is attached to the south elevation.
