Description

The building is a barn and stables located about 25 yards east of Wall End Farmhouse. It dates from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century and late 20th century. The structure is constructed from a mix of sandstone rubble and timber framing, covered with weatherboarding and topped with a corrugated iron roof. It consists of six bays arranged roughly east to west, with the barn occupying the three easternmost bays and featuring a central wagon bay that has opposing cart entries and double doors. The stable is found in the three westernmost bays and has two levels.

The main south elevation displays three doors, each with square side lights; two of these doors feature cambered brick heads. There are also three loft openings. Inside, the barn framing includes three rows of square panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate, along with a collar and tie-beam truss that has two collars, four struts supporting the lower collar, two struts for the upper collar, and a V-strut at the apex on the east end. The stable framing consists of one row of large rectangular panels from sill to wall-plate, with long straight braces in the lower corners and a collar and tie-beam truss that has three struts at the west end. Some intermediate trusses have been altered, and there are two tiers of trenched purlins. The barn and stables are adjacent to Great House Farmhouse to the east.
