Description
The building is a barn and stables dating from the 17th century, located about 10 yards north-east of Tan House Farmhouse. It is constructed with a timber frame and weatherboarding on a rubble base, with some sections of rubble walling. The roof is made of stone tiles arranged in diminishing courses, with some areas covered in corrugated metal sheeting. The structure features five framed bays aligned north-west to south-east, with the barn occupying the four south-easternmost bays. It includes a wagon bay with opposed cart entries and double doors in the third bay from the south-east end.
Inside, the barn has three rows of panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate. The roof consists of collar and tie-beam trusses with three struts and V-struts above the collar at each end, along with a similar intermediate truss with two struts, two intermediate tie-beam trusses with raking struts, and two tiers of trenched purlins. The stable occupies the north-west bay and is separated from the barn by a timber-framed partition. It features a large doorway in its south-west elevation and has a single row of panels beneath the eaves level. The north-west gable end has a similar end truss to those found in the barn. This barn and stable are included for their group value with Tan House Farmhouse.
