Description
Birds Nest Farm Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with alterations and an extension made in the 20th century. The building has a timber frame and is rendered, topped with a machine-tiled roof. Originally, it consisted of two bays with a cross wing on the right, forming a T shape in plan. The cottage is two storeys high, and a two-storey and attic cross wing was added to the left in the 20th century.
The structure features a plinth and an entrance in the hall, which includes a ground floor 20th-century leaded pane flush frame casement window. There is a two-light casement window on the first floor at the left end of the hall. The projecting gable fronted cross wings have three-light casements on the left, a single light in the attic, and two-light casements on the right, with cusped bargeboards. The early wing on the right is lower and has a broader gable.
An axial ridge stack is located at the right end of the hall and has four diagonally set flues that have been rebuilt. There is a 20th-century external stack with offsets at the left end. The right end features a recessed nine-pane fixed window and a four-light casement inserted between the studs towards the rear. At the back, some exposed studs can be seen in a two-light casement, along with a gabled dormer in the hall. The 20th-century cross wing extends further, with the first floor projecting and displaying cusped bargeboards.
