Description

Birchen Fold is a house dating from the 16th to early 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features a timber frame, with the cross wing displaying heavy close studding, braces, and plastered infill. The right side is constructed of brick, while the rest is roughcast, possibly over brick. The house has a late 20th-century tile roof, a stone ridge stack, and an old brick external stack at the rear. It is designed in a T-plan, with a cross wing on the right, and has two storeys plus an attic. The main facade facing the garden has a three-window range with three-light windows. The cross wing includes a 20th-century canted bay and an old casement window with glazing bars above. The attic features a small two-light leaded casement, while the left range has wood and iron casements with horizontal glazing bars, and the right range has small 20th-century windows. The right return side has a 20th-century door with sidelights, and the gables are adorned with shaped bargeboards. The rear of the house is similar to the front, with the cross wing having a brick plinth. Inside, one room contains a moulded ceiling beam and an open fireplace with a cambered moulded bressumer. Another room features an ogee stop-chamfered beam, and there is a late 16th to early 17th-century painted stone fireplace with a moulded straight-headed Tudor arch and sunk spandrels, along with initials on either side, a frieze of jewel work, and a moulded cornice.
