1/27 Hanging Cover Cottage

House. Circa 1500, altered in C17, restored c1970, extended at N 1982. Timber frame on brick and flint plinth. Plastered above, weatherboarded below. Steep old red tile roofs. One and a half storeys old S part and C20 single-storey weatherboarded N part in line facing E. Large central chimney at the change of height and small external gable chimney at S. Gabled dormer to old part with 2-light casement below and a boarded door to right in a Tudor arched. doorway. 2 small casement oriels on S end, one to each floor. The old part of the house comprises the upper end bay of a formerly 2-bay open hall, and the adjoining 2-storeyed bay. Crown-post roof with longitudial arched braces to collar purlin and cambered tie-beam with arched brace. Unusual jointing detail in ground floor partition where most studs are kept firm by a combination of tongue-and-groove and wedges. Frame exposed inside house. (RCHM Typescript)
