Description
Hanging Cover Cottage is a house dating from around 1500, with alterations made in the 17th century, restored around 1970, and extended to the north in 1982. It features a timber frame set on a plinth of brick and flint, with plaster above and weatherboarding below. The cottage has steep old red tile roofs, with the southern part being one and a half storeys and the northern part being a single-storey extension from the 20th century, both facing east. A large central chimney marks the change in height, along with a small external gable chimney on the south side. The old part of the house includes a gabled dormer with a two-light casement window below and a boarded door to the right in a Tudor arched doorway. There are also two small casement oriel windows on the south end, one on each floor. The original section of the house consists of the upper end bay of what was once a two-bay open hall, along with an adjoining two-storeyed bay. Inside, there is a crown-post roof with longitudinal arched braces to the collar purlin and a cambered tie-beam with an arched brace. An unusual jointing detail is present in the ground floor partition, where most studs are secured by a combination of tongue-and-groove and wedges. The frame is exposed inside the house.
