Description

TL 32 NW WESTMILL WAKELEY (south side)

1/3 North Barn at Wakeley Farm - (55m to NW of house)

GV II Barn. C17, altered in late C18, N aisle removed late C20. Timber frame now cased in red brick with steep half-hipped old red tile roof. 7-bay, formerly single-aisled on N. Tall barn facing S with double doors in 2nd and 6th bays. External stair at E end to serve upper floor inserted throughout barn to provide stables below. Heavy jowled posts, long double-curved heavy braces to tie-beams and arcade plate. Queen-strut clasped purlin roof with collars. Face-halved bladed scarf joint at mid-span in arcade plate. N side left open after removal of aisle except brick infill to end bays. Large wooden wheel for raising sacks to upper floor fixed in E bay between tie beams. Cylinder handpump fixed to E wall on floor below.
