Description
The North Barn at Wakeley Farm, located 55 meters northwest of the house, is a 17th-century barn that underwent alterations in the late 18th century. The northern aisle was removed in the late 20th century. The barn features a timber frame that is now encased in red brick, topped with a steep half-hipped roof made of old red tiles. It has seven bays and was originally single-aisled on the north side. The tall structure faces south and includes double doors in the second and sixth bays. An external stair at the eastern end provides access to the upper floor, which has been modified to serve as stables below. The barn is supported by heavy jowled posts and features long double-curved heavy braces connecting to the tie-beams and arcade plate. The roof is constructed with a queen-strut clasped purlin design, complete with collars. A face-halved bladed scarf joint is present at mid-span in the arcade plate. After the removal of the aisle, the north side remains open, with brick infill in the end bays. Additionally, a large wooden wheel for raising sacks to the upper floor is fixed in the eastern bay between the tie beams, and a cylinder handpump is attached to the eastern wall on the floor below.
