Description
Moor Hall Cottage is a house dating from circa 1600, with additions made in the 18th century and extensions in the 20th century. The construction is timber frame with roughcast rendering, and a brick chimney stack. Originally, the house comprised two main sections: a smaller area to the east and a larger open hall to the west.
The house presents as one-and-a-half storeys facing south, featuring three flush casement windows and a gabled porch aligned with the chimney. A mid-20th century extension is located on the west end, linked to a late-20th century single-storey wing at a right angle. The original half-hipped thatched roof, which was constructed with clasped-purlins, was lost in a fire in 2007.
Inside the original rooms, the exposed timber frame is a key feature, exhibiting straight tension bracing, jowled posts, and reused timbers acting as floor joists. A stop-chamfered axial beam supports the floor in the eastern section, complemented by a chamfered cross beam in the western section. Access between upper floor rooms is provided by a cutting tie-beam on the east side of the chimney. The central chimney stack has a flint base. The west hall features a large open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer. Plank doors with strap hinges lead off from the lobby entrance in front of the stack. The 20th century extensions to the west do not possess any particular architectural interest.
The house was built circa 1600, with a floor and central chimney inserted around 1700. It was divided into two dwellings in the 19th century but was restored as a single dwelling in the early 20th century. Further extensions occurred in two phases in the later 20th century.
Moor Hall Cottage is designated at Group Value II due to its substantial intact early 17th-century timber-frame structure and the retention of significant historic fabric, including chamfered ceiling beams, plank doors, and a fireplace featuring a chamfered bressumer.
