Description
Button Snap is a house that dates from the 17th century or earlier, with the eastern part possibly being a later extension. It features a timber frame that is roughcast over a plastered red brick sill and has a very steep thatched roof that is hipped at the west end, with higher eaves in the eastern section. Originally, it was likely a two-cell house facing south, with an end chimney on the east side and a slightly later one-and-a-half storey eastern extension beyond the chimney.
The single-storey western part has a slightly battered end wall and a central plank door, which is flanked by three-light flush mullioned wooden casement windows that have leaded lattice glazing. There are small ceramic plaques on either side of the door providing information about Charles Lamb. The eastern part has a small leaded window on the south wall, along with a door and window in the end wall, and a two-light leaded attic window.
Charles Lamb owned the property from 1812 to 1815 and it is mentioned in his essay "My First Play." The house was presented by Mrs. Greg to the Royal Society of Arts and was acquired by the Charles Lamb Society in 1949.
