Description
The South Barn at Mill Farm, located on the south side of the courtyard, is an early 17th-century barn. It features a timber frame resting on a red brick sill and is covered in dark weatherboarding with a steep half-hipped roof, now made of corrugated iron. This tall, four-bay, single-aisled barn faces north into the courtyard, with an aisle on the south side. There are double doors on the north side of the second bay from the west, along with a small winnowing door at the rear. The barn has heavy jowled posts with long curved braces connecting to the tie-beams and arcade plate, which features a face-halved bladed scarf joint over each post. Inclined queen-posts support a single purlin on each slope of the clasped purlin roof. Mid-height rails in the walls are tennoned in-line. This barn is noted as the oldest building in the courtyard group.
