Description
Steen Cottage is a house dating from the 16th century or early 17th century. It has a timber frame with roughcast and panelled pargetting on the south end, along with a plastered brick plinth. The roof is steep, covered with old red tiles, featuring a half-hipped design and a steeper catslide continuation over a rear outshot. The house has two storeys and a three-unit plan with a lobby entry and a central chimney, facing east.
There is a red brick central chimney located a third of the way from the south end, along with a later small external gable chimney at the north end, which is the downhill side. The front of the cottage features a plaster eaves cove and three 18th-century flush Yorkshire sliding casement windows on each floor, plus a smaller window above the door. The boarded door is accessed by two steps and is set in a plain doorcase with a lean-to tiled hood supported by brackets. Additionally, there is a small rectangular ground floor oriel window on brackets at the south gable end. The central chimney originally rose in front of the ridge and has since been widened, while the north gable chimney has tumbled brick offsets.
