Description
The East Barn at Langley Farm is a barn that dates from the 16th century for the southern part and the mid-17th century for the northern part. The barn features a timber frame set on a red brick sill and is covered in dark weatherboarding with a steeply pitched roof now made of corrugated sheeting. It is a long structure facing west into the yard and becomes taller as the ground slopes to the north.
The 16th-century section has heavy jowled posts and curved tension braces at the ends, with a single purlin clasped by a collar for each truss, supported by vertical queen-struts below. The two southern bays include a rear aisle. The taller three-bay northern part also has jowled posts and features one purlin for each slope, inclined queen-posts, a mid-height rail, and long straight braces connecting to the tie beam. There are opposed doors located in the middle bay. In the 19th century, a floor and corn bins were inserted into the two northern bays of the 16th-century section.
