Description
The north-west barn at Langley Farm is a 17th-century structure. It features a timber frame set on a red brick sill, with exposed timbers and red brick panel infill. The barn has a very steeply pitched roof that is now covered with slate. Originally a five-bay barn, it has been reduced to four bays, with a gabled projection to the north in what was the middle bay. This projection includes double doors beneath a swept roof, which is mirrored by a similar feature on the south side. The barn displays swept jowled posts, long straight tension braces in the walls, and straight braces to the tie beams. The roof is constructed with clasped purlins, with one purlin on each slope, along with collar and heavy vertical queen-struts. There is a face-halved scarf joint in the wallplate over the post.
