Description
The West Barn at Great Barwick Farm, located 50 meters to the west of the house, is a barn dating from the 14th century or earlier, with a roof that was altered in the 18th century. It features a timber frame set on red brick sills, tarred on the outside, and is dark weatherboarded beneath a steep hipped roof, which has gablet remains at the north and is now covered in corrugated iron. This high five-bay aisled barn has sills and base-plates that extend out to support the feet of the aisle posts. There is a gabled porch at the center of the east side. The posts and aisle-ties are trenched for passing-braces that rise to the tie beams. The barn includes square-section curved braces to the arcade plates and tie beams, with heavy jowled posts and aisle ties that have expanded ends. The arcade plate features a stop-splayed scarf with under-squinted butts and five face-pegs. The aisle posts have jowled heads, and the side walls have been raised by one and a half meters. The 18th-century roof is a queen-strut steep clasped-purlin design.
