Description

This is a 17th-century barn with a 19th-century cart shed attached to its southeast side. The barn is timber-framed and has weatherboarding, covered by a steep roof of old red tiles. It comprises four bays facing west, with a gabled porch on the north side of the second bay. Double doors on the rear wall provide access. The south end opens onto a more modern implement shed which is not of historical significance. The barn’s interior features jowled posts, long curved braces to cambered tie-beams, and mid-height rails tenoned in line. A dovecote is located in the upper gable of the porch. The wallplate above each bay post is joined by a face-halved and bladed scarf joint. Extending for two bays south of the southeast corner of the barn is a remnant of an earlier 17th-century barn, with heavier timbers. This section includes jowled posts and tension bracing to the mid-rail, also tenoned in line. It now forms part of the back wall of a five-bay, 19th-century lean-to cart shed, which supports the main barn.
