Description

Hall House is a late medieval house, likely built in the early 16th century. It features a timber-framed and plastered structure, with some parts replaced in plastered brick, and is topped with steep old red tile roofs. The house has one and a half storeys, with a two-storey east wing. The ground floor has three windows, while the upper floor has one jettied window and three cabled dormers. The windows are three-light flush casements with small panes, and the dormers and the east window on the ground floor have two-light casements. The entrance includes a four-panel door with a flat hood supported by shaped brackets.

Originally constructed as a small open-hall house facing south, Hall House has a jettied crosswing on the east and a two-storey service bay at the west end. Inside, the cross-passage features two doors with hollow chamfered four-centred heads leading to the service rooms, and part of a similar door head is located at the north end of the passage. The hall displays exposed close studding and an open truss with hollow chamfered tie-beams, a rebated crown-post, and thin two-way bracing to the collar purlin.

In the mid or late 17th century, a floor was inserted in the hall, and a central chimney was built backing onto the cross-passage. This chimney is offset to the south to accommodate a single stair, which likely replaced earlier stairs at each end of the house. A lateral chimney was added to serve the parlour in the cross-wing in the late 17th or early 18th century, and a chimney on the west gable dates from the conversion of this end into a living room. The house was converted into three cottages in the 19th century but has recently been restored.
