Description

The building is a barn and cartshed located in the south range of the north yard at Rossway Home Farm, dating from the 16th century or early 17th century, with an inserted floor from the 18th century and a cartshed from the 19th century that reuses older frames. It features timber frames on brick sill walls, covered in dark weatherboarding, and has steep old red tile roofs. The barn, which has four bays facing north, includes stable doors and boarded doors leading to the upper part. It is supported by jowled posts and inclined queen-posts, which hold a single large purlin on each slope, with wind-braces for added stability. The inserted floor creates stables with a hay loft above. The cartshed, which has five bays and is open-fronted facing west with a rear aisle, has two older bays to the north with collar-and-queen-strut trusses supporting a clasped purlin roof, while the two southern bays feature king strut trusses. The front is designed with straight braces leading to an open arcade. The high flint and brick rear wall of the cartshed serves as the farm's boundary wall.
