Description

The north and west ranges of farm buildings at Marlin Chapel Farm date from the 16th century and later. They feature timber frames set on flint and brick sills, with dark weatherboarding. The buildings have steep red tiled roofs, with hipped ends on the north range and a barn in the west range. These older ranges form part of a courtyard group within a moated manorial site, which includes a former entrance passage in the north range that leads to a cellar and a masonry west wall from a late medieval house, integrated into the buildings to the east of the central passage. The west range is a tall four-bay 16th-century barn, featuring double doors in the second bay from the north. It has heavy jowled posts with both curved and straight braces supporting a cambered tie beam and wallplates. The roof is a clasped purlin type, with one purlin on each slope, wind braces, and curved inclined queen-posts, but lacks a collar and has diminished principals. The wall on the east side of the blocked entrance passage in the north range includes moulded stonework, likely from the nearby Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene. A former two-storey timber-framed house is depicted in a drawing by Buckler from 1828. The farmhouse itself is not included in this listing.
