Description
NORTHCHURCH MARLIN CHAPEL FARM SP 90 NE (North side) 3/227 North and West Ranges 6.11.86 of Farm Buildings at Marlin Chapel Farm
GV II
Farm buildings. C16 and later. Timber frames on flint and brick sills, dark weatherboarded. Steep red tiled roofs hipped ends to N range and barn in W range. The older N and W ranges of a courtyard group within a moated manorial site with former entrance passage central in N range with cellar and masonry W wall of a former late medieval house incorporated in buildings to E of central passage. W range is a tall 4-bay C16 barn with double doors on E in 2nd bay from N. Heavy jowled posts with curved and straight braces to cambered tie beam and wallplates. Clasped purlin roof with one purlin in each slope, wind braces, curved inclined queen-posts, no collar, and diminished principles. Wall on E side of blocked entrance passage in N range incorporates moulded stonework presumably from nearby Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene. Former 2-storeys timber framed house shown in Buckler drawing of 1828 in HRO. Farmhouse not included in this list.
