Description

The North Barn at Barnes Farm, located 10 meters to the west of the house, is a 17th-century barn. It features a timber frame that is dark weatherboarded and has a steep old red tile roof that extends over the south aisle. The barn is tall and consists of five bays with a single aisle, and it has a gabled porch in the middle of the south aisle that includes a pigeon loft in the gable. The structure has stepped jowl posts with straight braces connecting to the tie-beams and arcade plate. The walls have mid-height rails that are in line. The roof is pitched at 45 degrees and includes collar trusses and struts across the lower angles. It has a side-purlin roof where the upper purlin is clasped with diminished principals, and the lower butt purlins are staggered in line, supported by straight wind braces. The aisle purlin is propped by an inclined strut from the aisle tie. There is a squint-butted scarf joint with two edge pegs in the arcade plate. A modern entrance has been added at the west end. The farmhouse at Barnes Farm is not listed.
