Description
Hill Cottage is an early 16th century 2-bay house, substantially altered in the 18th century and incorporating a later 19th century feature. The house was originally timber-framed and has a red brick casing with random blue headers. It has a steep roof covered in old red tiles. The original house was two storeys and two bays, with a side jetty on the east and a large internal south gable chimney. An 18th century, two-storey brick addition was built on the north side, featuring an external gable chimney and a rear brick casing to the jetty of the older part of the house. A chimney was added to the middle bay in the 19th century. The east front has three windows on each floor. The windows are flush leaded casements with three lights on the first floor, a central iron opening light, and segmental arches with a four-by-two-by-three light arrangement on the ground floor. A panelled door with a hood on brackets leads into the north part of the building, above which is a Phoenix fire insurance plaque. The interior features jowled posts, double curved braces to the tie-beam, clasped-purlin wind braces, flat joists, and heavy chamfered floor beams.
