Description
Nos. 73, 75, 77, 79, and 81 Langley Hill is a house that has been divided into five separate homes. It dates back to the 16th century and features a brick front with a rear extension and internal divisions added in the early 19th century. The building has a timber frame that is roughcast, with exposed timbers in the south and rear gables. The front is made of plum brick, which is patterned with vertical stripes and has window surrounds made of gault brick. The ground floor has stone haunched lintels with raised keystones. The house at No. 81 has a painted front. The roof is steep and covered with old red tiles.
The structure is a long two-storey building facing south, with short gabled rear wings at each end and a later parallel-roofed rear extension in between. The arrangement consists of four single-fronted houses and a double-fronted house at the west end. The eaves have a wide soffit. The sash windows have 4/8 panes on the first floor and 8/8 panes on the ground floor. The roof features clasped purlins with diminished principals, a collar, and rectangular framing.
Inside, there are jowled posts and curved braces supporting the tie-beams. Old chimneys are located at the west gable of No. 81 and between Nos. 73 and 75. The roof contains wattle and daub infill panels, and sooted rafters have been noted over the west end.
