Description
The Old Palace Public House is a building that originally served as a house, dating from the late 17th century for the eastern part, with a rear wing added in the early 19th century. The front was encased in brick during the mid-19th century when the western part, which includes a cellar, was added. The structure features a timber frame that is cased in plum brick, with the western gable end at the rear constructed from uncoursed knapped flint with brick dressings. The building has steep old red tile roofs, with the western part being hipped.
This two-storey house, which includes an attic and cellar, faces south and has a short, parallel-roofed two-storey rear range at the northeast. The south front features two three-light casement windows on the first floor beneath the eaves. There were originally two doorways side by side in the middle; the left-hand doorway has been converted into a six-over-six pane sash window. To the left, there is a recessed sash window with ten-over-ten panes and plastered reveals, while to the right, there is a rectangular bay window with three-over-three panes and a hipped tile roof, which includes panelled folding internal shutters. Inside, there is a winding stair in the northeast corner of the 17th-century part, along with a stop-chamfered ceiling beam.
