Description
The South Barn at The Old Farmhouse, located 5 metres south of the house, is a barn dating from the 17th century or earlier. It is a tall, timber-framed structure that is weatherboarded and consists of four bays with aisles. The barn faces north and backs onto a moat. It features a steep gabled roof that is thatched, with red tiled valleys leading to a thatched gabled porch situated in the second bay from the east. The rear slope of the roof is now covered in corrugated iron.
The barn has a red brick base that extends in spur walls to support timber plates for the aisle posts. It includes shouldered jowled posts, curved braces connecting the tie beams and arcade plates, and the aisle tie beams do not connect to the jowled posts of the aisle walls. The roof has thin clasped purlins with curved wind braces and lap jointed collars. The arcade plate over the entrance is scarfed with a face halved and bladed scarf, while the wall plates feature edge-halved scarf joints with bridled butts. This barn is part of a group of buildings surrounding The Old Farmhouse.
