Description
The hen house at Old Green Street Farm is a timber-framed structure dating from the mid- to late 18th century. It is one of two remaining parts of what was once a range of four buildings that included a barn, stables, and granary.
The exterior features a weather-boarded finish beneath a thatched roof. Located in the north-east section of the former farmstead, this low, single-story gabled building was originally the south-easterly end of the original range. It has two doors and a small opening at ground floor level.
Inside, the hen house is divided into two spaces, each with its own entrance. The roof consists of coupled rafters that oversail the wallplate, while the principal rafters rest on posts. The thatch is laid directly onto widely-spaced laths. At the south end, there is a timber trough attached to the wall, and the north space contains nesting boxes made of machine-cut timber boards. The walls are made of weather boarding attached to studs, reinforced with straight diagonal braces.
