Description
White Cottage is an 18th-century house located on the east side of Cradle End in Little Hadham. It is a two-storey, two-window building constructed of plastered clay lump, facing north and topped with a gabled pantiled roof. A mid-20th century, one-and-a-half-story pantiled rear extension has an internal gable chimney. A single-storey stable with a steep corrugated iron pitched roof is situated on the right side. The house and stable are built of clay lump walling, with the interior of the stable walls exposed. The house originally comprised two rooms, with only one heated. An internal red brick gable chimney is located on the east side and features a zigzag flue in the upper room. A single irregular tie beam is centrally positioned within the house, incorporating a staircase rising beneath the west side of it. The clay lumps used in construction are approximately 18 inches long and 6 inches high, and feature a line of regular indentations near the top edge. This represents an unusual survival of a primitive house-building technique.
