Description

The West Barn at Box Hall, located 20 meters to the northwest of the house, is a barn dating from the 17th century. It is constructed of red brick, much of which has been renewed, and features steep old red tile roofs. The barn is a large, unaisled structure with five bays, facing east. It has a gabled porch in the middle bay, which is adorned with weatherboarding in the gable. The shallow bay posts, which are unjowled, rise from stones built into the walls to the cambered tie-beams. Long curved braces connect to the tie beams. The trusses have a high collar and angle struts that support a hybrid side-purlin roof, featuring upper clasped-purlins and lower butt-purlins on each slope. The porch roofs are also clasped-purlin, and there is a face-halved bladed scarf joist in the rear wall-plate.
