Description
The East Barn at Tankards Farm, located 80 meters to the east-southeast of the house, is a 16th-century barn. It features a timber frame set on a low brick sill and is covered with dark weatherboarding. The barn has a steeply pitched roof made of corrugated iron and consists of three tall bays facing west, with a gabled projecting central porch.
Architectural details include jowled posts, curved braces supporting irregular tie-beams, and cranked tension braces attached to the sill in the end and side walls. Each slope of the roof has one purlin supported by collars with vertical queen-struts, and there are curved wind-braces. The posts have heavy jowls, and the wallplate features a squint-butted scarf joint secured with two edge pegs. The roof has thin scantlings intended for thatch, and the carpentry is rough, utilizing irregular timbers.
